Seven Generations Receive US

Theo lovingly pets the polar bear that belonged to his
Nice-great-great-grandfather, William Bryan Robbins, Sr.
4 July 2018
Taken on the residence of his Nice-grandfather Robbins in Stevens Co., Washington.
Earlier this month, I frolicked with prolonged household and mates at my mother and father’ place for his or her annual Fourth of July barbecue.  My 20-month-old grandson, Theo, attended together with his mother and father, my daughter and son-in-law.  It was Theo’s second Fourth of July at his Nice-grandpa and Nice-grandma Robbins’ property excessive within the Selkirk Mountains, and this time he was large enough to run round.

And run round, he did.

They are saying it takes a village to boost a baby.  It took virtually that many to regulate a busy toddler that likes to discover: his mother and father, his three cousins, and me.

Often, he would come throughout one thing that will seize his consideration, and he would maintain nonetheless for a couple of minutes.  A type of objects was the polar bear statue of my great-grandfather, William Bryan Robbins, Sr.

I’ve written about Bryan’s service with the American North Russian Expeditionary Forces in a collection on this weblog, and it’s the statue I reference within the first submit in that collection. When my dad was a boy, he and his father got here throughout this statue at a nursery.  Grandpa determined it will make the proper reward for Nice-grandpa, as a technique to honor his army service.

When Nice-grandpa died, the statue grew to become Grandpa’s.  And after Grandpa died, my aunt introduced it out West from Michigan to ship it to Dad on certainly one of her visits.  Now it sits on the coated entrance porch of my mother and father’ log residence, up within the pine forests of Japanese Washington….

…the place Theo found it.

I want I may have captured the look on Theo’s face when he noticed Nice-grandpa’s polar bear.  His eyebrows rose, his mouth opened huge (in order that his binky fell out!), after which he ran to squat and pet the bear.

In that second, I felt the pages of historical past flip.  I had met my great-grandfather a few instances once I was little or no (too younger to recollect, sadly).  And right here was my grandson, admiring and loving one thing that had belonged to an ancestor 5 generations earlier than him, a person his Mimi (grandma) had met.  A person his Mimi will inform tales about to him, when he’s sufficiently old to know, simply as my father and grandfather instructed me tales about their grandparents and great-grandparents….

…the tales that motivated me to start genealogical analysis; the tales that motivated me to write down down my ancestor tales, or AnceStories.

When my great-grandfather died in 1972, he had recognized seven generations of Robbins in his lifetime, from his great-grandparents, to his grandparents, mother and father, siblings and cousins, kids, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. It was a span of figuring out individuals who had lived over the course of 152 years, from 1820 to 1972!

My grandfather additionally had recognized seven generations of Robbins in his lifetime when he handed in 2003; individuals who had lived over a course of 159 years, from 1844 to 2003!  My dad, at almost three-quarters of a century outdated, has recognized seven generations of Robbins, too; despite the fact that his great-grandfather Robbins died earlier than he was born, he knew his great-grandmother.

I’ve recognized six generations of Robbins.  And if I am fortunate, sometime, I will be a great-grandmother, and know Theo’s kids.  Who is aware of what number of generations Theo will know in his lifetime?

In Pacific Northwest Native cultures, there’s an inter-tribal worth of “Seven Generations,” through which the influence of selections on the subsequent seven generations is taken into account.  As genealogists, have we thought-about how we’re passing on the tales, pictures, heirlooms, traditions, and tradition that we now have realized and inherited from the ancestors inside reminiscence to our descendants?

What number of generations have you ever recognized?
